DCC 1/16/14: Announcing: Commander Clashes!

Announcing... Saturday Casual Commander Clashes!

Beginning with Saturday, February 8th, and going forward, we will be running Casual Commander Clashes every Saturday (unless the day is packed with another event, such as the Born of the Gods Prerelease events on the first Saturday of February)!

The times will be at 2:00pm and 6:00pm

How they will work:
-X number of players will sign-up for the event by the start time. Entry fee is FREE.
-We will pair these players randomly into 3-5 player pods at the start of the event
-No time limit, no pressure
-For simply playing, you will receive any snack sold in the store for free ($2 value or less). Note: You must actually play to receive the freebie! If you get eliminated right away, don't worry, we will still give you your snack, and perhaps a second one to soften the blow. 'Cuz that's harsh man.
-That's entirely how it works- no particular extra incentive for winning outside of bragging rights, though you are more than welcome to pool your snacks into a prize for the winner of your game! (mmm...)

We will every-now-and-then give out a neat random door prize for free as well, though the frequency and composition will be completely up to us! We like surprises :-)

We hope for this to be a great way for folks that love the casual Commander format to get in diverse and fun games with new and old faces alike! We are excited to provide a more structured date and start times for Commander to be played here at Curio. Enjoy the free snacks and have fun playing Commander!

DCC 1/14/14 (and 1/13/14): SCG IQ Results, Board Gaming League News!

Man. Where has the sun been these past few days!? We hope you had a great weekend (and Monday).

At Curio

This past Sunday we ran our monthly Star City Games Invitational Qualifier. The format was Standard, and we hit a nice 43-player attendance! Top 8 saw a total prize support of $250 cash and over $400 in store credit, and many extras like custom SCG Top 8 playmats, Top 8 pins, promo dice bags and backpacks. Our Top 8:
(couldn't fit everyone in the picture unfortunately)

Pro-player Joshua Cho managed to dominate the tournament and walked away with the big score!

(Sorry for the blurriness!)

Congratulations Mr. Cho!

For those who are unfamiliar or vaguely familiar with Star City Games Invitational Qualifiers, they are some pretty exciting constructed Magic the Gathering tournaments that draw in professional players from all around the East Coast! There is always a nice incentive of $250 cash for first place, and always plenty of more prize support to go along with it. In addition, by making Top 8 you will earn special points to qualify for premiere and luxurious Star City Games mega-events hosted at large-scale event centers all around America.

We host SCG IQs once a month, always on a Sunday at 11am. So far, the format has been exclusively Standard, but that will change with our SCG IQ coming up in March, which will be our first Legacy IQ, and we are very excited to make it an amazing event for our Legacy players. If all goes well, we will be moving forward from March with the aim of hosting both a Standard and a Legacy IQ once a month each!

Board Gaming League

Heads up, all participants in our Board Gaming League: This League was created with a three-month lifespan, and it will be finishing with the end of this month! We hope you have all been having a fantastic time participating in this season's Board Gaming League, and we look forward to ending it with a bang!

4PM: Through Fate, Fortune, or sheer Stupidity, you have found yourself trapped in the Infinity Dungeon! You and your comrades must escape! Infinity Dungeon is a cooperative story telling game for three to eight players. Each character will take on a role, like that of the Artist, the Postman, the Pirate, or the Cultist. The goal is for the Active Player to propose a plan that gets everyone (including the Active GM) out of their current room and its impending predicament. After the Active Player comes up with a plan, each other player can vote on it. They may either accept it, or Challenge it. If they choose to Challenge, they propose a condition, “I think this plan would be better if [condition].” This may be something as simple as “I think this plan needs more explosions”, to something as complicated as “David Bowie needs to be moonwalking through the air to dub-step.” The Active Player then has to reformulate their plan to make the Challenge integral to the plan. If they can, the Challenge is passed. If they cannot, the Challenge is failed. For every agreement vote, and every successful Challenge, the plan gets stronger. The Active GM then flips over the top card of the room deck and checks the number on the bottom against the strength of the plan. If the number is equal or higher, the plan is successful, and the Active GM narrates how it was successful. If not, the Active GM gets to narrate the character’s comic and often grisly demise. Can you escape the Infinity Dungeon?

7PM: Machine of Death is a game wherein every player is an assassin. You’ll be presented with a target, and the method in which they must be killed. However, the method is always vague, and you’ll have to come up with a way to kill them given that particular restriction. For example, Old Age could mean that they get mowed down by an elderly driver that forgot to take their pills. You’ll have to come up with ways to ingeniously use the various Black Market Gifts that you have to come up with an ironclad plan. The less believable your plan, the more difficult the die roll. Can you kill four targets before any of your friends?

DCC 1/12/14: Machine of Death!

Hi folks! Our apologies for not being more clear at first: our Daily Curio Cast will be a weekday-thing, as everyone needs a break :-) That being said, we have a special tidbit to share with you today:

Let us discuss a new arrival... MACHINE OF DEATH

The Machine of Death game is a story telling game. The basic premise is that you're a group of assassins tasked with killing a specific individual. Sometimes that individual has a particularly crippling phobia or something to that nature. You're always given a selection of items called Black Market Gifts. You know HOW he must be killed, but the method that you pull it off is up to you.

The rules are simple. Given what you know about the target, construct a plan that kills him that fits within the framework of the prediction given to you by the Machine of Death. Example: Old Age could mean that you're run over the next day by an elderly driver that forgot to take their pills. Depending on how you've used your Black Market Gift cards, and the intricacy and plausibility of your plan, it will determine the rolls that you need to make to succeed at your plan. An unlikely plan that's based around one item might make you need to roll a six, while a well-designed plan that uses multiple items might only need a two.

There are multiple different ways to play the game. Competitive mode pits the players against each other. This mode is more for the people who want to make it competitive and cutthroat. Head-To-Head Mode (which is a bit of a misnomer since it's designed for four or more players) is similar to Apples to Apples/Cards Against Humanity. One person, designated "The Chief" will determine who's plan is the best, and give them the opportunity to try their plan. Cooperative mode can be split into two different aspects: Mission Mode, and regular. The regular method just involves the players coming up with a plan given the tools at their disposal, while Mission Mode has a set number of targets in a scaling increase in difficulty. Day Off Mode has you playing a game wherein you must solve problems using your assassin skills. Problems like, "stuck jam jar", or "transplanting a tulip bulb". Essentially, it's a story telling game, and a really good party game. The types of people that like Apples to Apples and Cards Against Humanity are going to like this game as well. You're trying to construct a narrative within a given restriction, and letting your imagination run wild in order to do so means a good time for everyone.

As of this weekend, we have the Machine of Death core game and both expansions for sale in limited supply:

Machine of Death Core: $24.99
Machine of Death: Webcomic Pals expansion: $14.99
Machine of Death: Webcomic Chums expansion: $14.99

Get assassinating!

DCC 1/10/14: Let's talk Dragonshields!

Hokay, so:

If you know anything about Dragonshields sleeves, check this out. This week debuts the release of the newest color in the Dragonshield card sleeve range: Turquoise. We received our shipment yesterday, and we decided to crack a box to show people what they look like first-hand.

We were impressed.

What we here at Curio have become aware of over the past few years of selling Dragonshields are two primary things:

1). Dragonshields are incredibly durable and don't bend or scratch easily. We often hear stories of players who have been using the same Dragonshields for 4+ years and have yet to tear a sleeve.
2). Dragonshields, ever since their joining to Fantasy Flight Games as a distributor of the Dragonshield product, has had some hiccups in certain production aspects. Nothing that makes each sleeve itself normally (there has been exceptions) any less in quality- in fact they still ring true. It's the width and height that has been seeing minor fluctuations occasion.

What that means is that sometimes you will open a box of Dragonshields, and the width of each sleeve will vary by .5 to 1 milimeter or something like that, and sometimes worse. It is hardly a problem most of the time, and it is in fact quite similar to how most card sleeves are designed by almost every company these days, but it could be better, and in the past it has been better.

You see, Dragonshields have been around a long time. They weren't the first, however. in 1995, Ultra Pro created the first card sleeves specifically designed for collectible and trading cards. They called them "Deck Protectors". They were an excellent product for the time, but improvements were to be made, and Dragonshields were designed and born in Denmark. They certainly set the bar as they made their way around the globe. Years later, they became branded by the company Arcane Tinmen (who also now owns the rights to The Spoils CCG). Arcane Tinmen is still based in Denmark, but a handful of years ago they chose to join forces with Fantasy Flight Games to better manage and distribute their premiere Dragonshield sleeves, especially within the United States.

While that merger of sorts was bold and probably highly-lucrative, it created a huge demand on the production side for Arcane Tinmen. They suddenly needed to make many more Dragonshield sleeves to meet the quotas Fantasy Flight could acquire for them.

Production faltered. Even here at Curio, we saw it. New arrivals of Dragonshields were mostly good, but at least one box of Dragonshields in an order would be completely unacceptable. 1-2 milimeter changes in sleeve width, chaff still on the sides of the sleeves, sleeves that weren't fully cut, and even damaged sleeves. It got to the point within weeks where it was multiple returned boxes per order. We reached a level of expectancy for Dragonshields to be hit-or-miss. We came to an unfortunate decision: for a solid two months at least, we stopped carrying Dragonshields entirely. It had become very frustrating, and we were ready to never carry the product again. Here was this great, amazing product, and now it had been reduced to a rushed and haphazard version of its former self. We gave our distributors, and even Fantasy Flight directly, our honest feedback.

Fortunately, many others must have as well, because the production side of Dragonshields changed for the better sooner than we expected. It brought us to where we have been for the past year and a half- the same way described at the beginning of this Cast. Excellent durability and quality, but slight variance in width and sometimes height from sleeve to sleeve. Still some minor issues.

Now, finally, let us take a look at these new Turquoise sleeves. I think this is something very important to note, especially coming from a Dragon Shield product:

They are perfect.

The height of each sleeve and the width of each sleeve is more exactly matched than we have ever seen in any standard-size CCG sleeve. Ever. It is truly impressive.

We let our customers in-store see this box of Turquoise Dragonshields yesterday and, as you may have guessed, we sold several. And you know what? Every box was the same. Beautiful and perfect.

Thank you, Arcane Tinmen, for restoring glory to your product and then pushing it even further to the zenith of card sleeve excellence. These are truly amazingly designed.

-CC

P.S. The number of sleeves in this 100ct box? 104. :-)

Board Gaming League news for this Saturday (1/11):

4PM: Puzzle Strike is a highly interactive deck building game that features a very interesting mixture of themes. There’s no player elimination, it’s asymmetric, and the game is designed with a built in timer that makes sure it doesn’t go long. Each player will choose a character that has three unique chips. Unlike other deck building games, this game doesn’t use cards. No need for shuffling, you just put your chips in your bag, and shake it up! Each turn, you play through four phases, and then play continues clockwise. As gems in your gem pile accrue, you get closer to losing, as if you have ten or more gems in your gem pile at the beginning of the buy phase, the game is over and the player with the fewest gems in their gem pile wins. But, as you play closer to the edge, you draw more chips into your hands, allowing you to have better turns. Can you manage this risk/reward strategy?

7PM: Nightfall is a deck building game featuring a heavy theme of things that go bump in the night. Werewolves, Vampires, and Ghouls all make an appearance, and you must use them to battle your opponents and inflict Wounds. Just like in a normal deck building game, there’s a pile of cards that are able to be bought (referred to as the common archive), but unlike other deck building games, you draft two personal archives that only you can buy from. This allows you to tailor your strategy in advance, but you have to be careful, as everything you play, your opponents can use to play their own cards as well! Manage your cards carefully and you’ll come out of the bloody melee on top. Manage them poorly, and you could find yourself ripped to shreds!

Hey, have you ever tried these? They are called "Chocorooms".

(Image from littleorangekitchen.typepad.com)

They are absolutely delicious. Milk and dark chocolate combination melted over a crispy cracker. Like Pocky but better. As of today, we now have these in stock, in packages of about 15 chocorooms each, $2 after tax. YUM
